L. Banks Holt Manufacturing Co., established in 1879 by Lawrence Banks Holt, is a historic textile enterprise based in Burlington, North Carolina. Originally founded as a cotton mill, the company played a significant role in the industrialization of the North Carolina Piedmont. Its manufacturing capabilities historically evolved from spinning cotton yarn to weaving specialized plaid cloth, notably contributing to the production of 'Alamance Plaids,' one of the first brand-name colored cotton cloths in the Southern United States. Over its operational history, the company expanded its material expertise to include rayon manufacture and polyester double-knit fabrics. While the original manufacturing site eventually became part of Burlington Industries and later transitioned into a historical site, the company's legacy is preserved through extensive textile artifacts, including original looms, knitting machines, and mill ledgers.
